Article Thankyou From Kurdistan

Thank you from Kurdistan: Dilar Dirik

In an era of abusive global capitalist modernity, in which human rights are violated for corporate and imperialist interests, the voices of oppressed people who are in search of recognition and the rights they ought to be naturally entitled to, are silenced.

As a Kurdish woman, I feel that it is my responsibility to stand up against the oppression of my identity in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria.

But in order to strengthen our own struggle, we need look outside to seek the solidarity and support of other people’s struggles. There are many people who fight for their identity rights within borders that have crossed their natural reality. Understanding other struggles and fighting alongside each other is central to challenging oppression.

On February 01, 2013, Sindhi people of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz Party marched in different cities across Sindh, holding up signs saying “We strongly condemn Turkish imperialism against Kurdistan and fully support the Kurdish Freedom Struggle”. The activists also strive for their own local independence from Pakistan. Their demonstrations as independent, voluntary manifestations of solidarity with a people they do not have an economic interest in supporting are a matter of acknowledging that one’s own cause is related to the struggle of other people. The next day, they marched for Tibet. As I received pictures from their protests, I felt ashamed for knowing so little about their cause and I am committed to learn more.

In order to strengthen our own understanding of freedom, we must stay in solidarity with others. Regardless of whether we make a chance or not, if we believe in freedom, we must believe in freedom for all. That is why I am very thankful for the JSMM’s protests for Kurdistan. In our moments of deepest pain, after the murders of three incredibly beautiful Kurdish women activists in Paris, our international friends did not leave us alone. They marched with us in the icy cold Paris demonstrations, they hungered with us, protested, and they smiled at us with roses in their hands. We may not have the support of military alliances, economic trade agreements, arms trade clubs. But we have the love, solidarity, and thoughts of amazing individuals all over the world with us. Just when the media, security institutions, and governments, all of which were designed to protect the people, have abandoned us, it was people who live far away from us who held us by the hand and showed us that we are not alone. International solidarity only artificially and forcefully exists in static, military, economic systems. But it genuinely exists in the hearts of normal people.

I wish the best of success to the Sindhi people. I would like to thank you with all my heart for your effort to raise awareness of the Kurdish people’s movement- may our fights for recognition form a road to freedom. Freedom for Sindh, Freedom for Kurdistan!
